This is the most overlooked technology today. Did you even know it existed? – Samsung Magazine

It's been nearly four years since Samsung launched the first Android phone with UWB wireless technology (Ultra-broad wave). Since then, eight other smartphone series have received this technology, Galaxy, vMultiple Galaxy S21, S22, S23, and S24 phones, as well as the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th generations of the Z Fold series. Then the Korean giant Google followed with the Pixel 6 Pro, 7 Pro, and 8 Pro phones, the Pixel Fold phone, and the Pixel tablet.

UWB enables secure “keyless” entry into some luxury cars, and Samsung is also using it to better locate lost Galaxy SmartTag+ and SmartTag2 smart devices in your area. That's about all this technology can be used for currently. UWB is also supposed to make it possible to quickly send music from Pixel phones to a Pixel tablet, but Google hasn't rolled out that feature yet, despite being vocal about it in recent months.

Even the new Bluetooth trackers aren't compatible with Android, and Find My Device from Chipolo and Pebblebee don't support UWB. And it looks like the locators coming from the Eufa workshop will be on the same page.

Today UWB is roughly what it was a year or even two ago, at least across the Androidu world. The matter is different in the “Apple” world, as Apple uses this technology in a whole range of products, whether it is the AirTag smart pendant, select iPhones, or the HomePod and HomePod Mini smart speakers.

So we can hope to see UWB more common in Android devices in the near future – Not just on Pixels and Galaxy devices. Streaming music can be a good start, as can be used in Bluetooth trackers. Perhaps more tech giants like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Vivo and others need to hop on this slow-moving train. Hopefully, UWB support – with or without the help of the companies mentioned above – will be different in a year or two than it is today.
