Wuhan, China, November 7, 2022, Xinhua = Kyodo News JBN – The Chinese University of Geosciences (Wuhan), which celebrated its 70th anniversary in November. Potential land: tasks and challenges of research-intensive universities. International University Deans Forum.
Representatives of world-renowned geosciences research universities, primary and secondary school principals, and eminent academics from around the world met in person or online. The participants discussed the main challenges facing the habitability of the land and exchanged views on the tasks, responsibilities and pathways to enhance the habitability of the land through education. The forum jointly published “The Wuhan Consensus: A New Approach to Earth Science Education”. (Full text of the consensus:end to end )
The consensus emphasized that humanity’s common future depends on the habitability of the planet. Our common future is determined by the habitability of our planet. The combined effects of Earth’s evolution and human-caused change have led to an increasingly severe global shortage of energy resources, environmental pollution, climate change, frequent disasters, and environmental damage, making the Earth’s habitability precedent rapidly threatening unfathomably.
Modern Earth sciences have made great strides in the era of Earth system science, which focuses on the study of the past, present, and future of the habitable Earth by examining deep Earth, deep seas, deep space, and deep time.
In response to scientific progress and the demands of the times, the consensus proposes new perceptions and definitions of the role, place and way of life of the human race in the world within the vision of a plural universe. The consensus tells us that all of humanity must coordinate and improve the value system, the knowledge system, and the dissemination system for Earth science education.
It will contribute to the formation of a more diverse, inclusive and inclusive model that produces theories, technologies and methods of production and green and low carbon lifestyles.
Earth’s habitability has been disrupted for many years in the Anthropocene. It is time to initiate, promote and practice an entirely new earth science education that will help move humanity as one of the diverse participants and builders of the habitable Earth.
The consensus calls on universities, research institutes, primary and secondary schools, and all sectors of society around the world to take concerted action to implement the new earth science education and to promote the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature in a timely manner.
