TSMC, the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer, wants to start producing its 2-nanometer chips next year, which will then be used in future Apple iPhones and co. The first production systems are not expected to be installed until April of this year at the earliest.
Apple is the first company to use TSMC's current 3nm technology for the A17 Pro chip, which is installed in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. So it makes sense that Apple would also use the new 2nm chip technology in future iPhones. Since TSMC plans to start production of this new technology in 2025, it will soon be possible to install 2nm chips in the corresponding devices.
as Financial Times It was reported that TSMC has already demonstrated corresponding prototypes of 2nm chips to Apple. Apple is said to be working closely with TSMC to develop and implement the chips. In contrast to the 3nm version, the new 2nm chips aim to outperform the 3nm version in terms of transistor density, performance and efficiency.
Plans are underway for 1.4nm chips
MacRumors It also reported, citing DigiTimes, that TSMC is already investigating which of its facilities will produce the most advanced 1.4nm chip. This is scheduled to happen in 2027. In the last quarter of 2023, the company began mass production of the 3-nanometer chip, which is expected to be used in other Apple devices later this year.
