Behind the scenes, Germany has tried in vain to prevent nuclear power from being seen as a state-sponsored investment in the future. In one of her recent interviews with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) stated that Berlin’s new traffic light alliance will have to prepare for a defeat in the EU Commission when it comes to nuclear power. According to Merkel, the Commission has started a procedure on the initiative of France and other EU countries, according to which nuclear energy will soon be classified as sustainable in terms of climate protection.
Decision on the other hand is unlikely
A decision against nuclear power in the so-called benchmarking of financial markets can only be taken if 20 of the 27 EU member states vote explicitly “no.” This is considered unlikely because France already has allies in the European Union on the issue that are interested in French technology to build more nuclear power plants.
Will natural gas turn green soon, too?
Along the same lines, a decision could also be made in favor of natural gas, which is considered by many as an important bridging technology for hydrogen production. The Traffic Lights Alliance also takes a different view on the natural gas issue. A decision from the European Union Commission is expected this year.
