Focusing on autonomous, networked and electric systems, ZF presents its fully integrated modular electric central drive system Cetrax 2 solutions for intercity buses and coaches at the “UITP World Public Transport Summit 2023” (June 4-7) in Barcelona It has a combined three-speed gearbox It delivers a continuous output of 380 kW (517 hp) and weighs just 385 kg.

Another step into the future of PNV is the generation of ZF’s new driverless, all-electric Shuttle for use in urban and mixed-traffic environments that enables autonomous, quiet and zero-emissions urban passenger transportation. With a selectable battery capacity of between 50 and 100 kWh, the next generation shuttle can travel up to 130 kilometers. The maximum speed available was initially 40 km/h, later 80 km/h. With 15 seats, the bus can carry up to 22 passengers.

The technology group will also offer the Scalar digital software solution for coordinating the fleet of self-driving vehicles in real time and the ZF Bus Connect fleet management system for buses of all types of drive in Barcelona. At the UITP World Congress, the company is presenting its new “EcoLife Health Check” module, which is dedicated to increasing vehicle availability. It’s ZF’s entry in remote diagnostics for bus fleets. Health Check uses data from the transmission system (engine speed, gear phase, oil temperature, oil pressure, etc.) to provide information about the actual condition of the transmission. Since the data is collected online, there is no longer a need to call the checked bus back to the warehouse for analysis. Operators, for example, using transmission oil as best as possible, can avoid premature maintenance and thus reduce maintenance costs and increase vehicle availability.

ZF Bus Connect offers, as standard, functions to optimize driving and energy or fuel consumption, to avoid dangerous situations, and to monitor the battery level and wear of other systems.

ZF also showcases its first brake assist system for city buses with active intervention to reduce the consequences of a collision, and the Ecolife 2 automatic transmission. At the same time, the new design is lighter and easier to maintain. Features include stop and drift functions, and quick but smoother and more comfortable gear shifting. With the Ecofife Coachline, there are new variants that, thanks to their higher torque range, are suitable for buses up to 2800 Nm. (AWM)
