Something is happening in Wedau-Nord’s futuristic technology quarter: In November, GEBAG began renovation and conversion work on the former boiler house. “The building is mainly distinguished by its striking, terraced chimney, which makes it an easily recognizable landmark from afar,” explains Bernd Wortmeier, Managing Director of GEBAG. “In the future, it will not be ‘only’ the boilers that will work there: in the next 16 months, GEBAG will transform the boiler house into an energy center. Two heating and power plants, two heat pumps and a boiler will be placed in the building for this purpose.”

GEBAG is investing a total of around €5.3 million in the conversion, and planning came from the Dusseldorf office of Miksch Rücker Malchartzeck Architekten. Stadtwerke Duisburg, which has signed a 25-year lease, will be the tenant of the future energy centre.

In the future, Stadtwerke Duisburg will use the energy center to supply both residents of the new urban district 6-Seen-Wedau, which is directly south of the technology district, and, in the future, users of university buildings together with local residents. heating. says Andreas Gutschek, member of the board of directors for infrastructure and digitalization at Stadtwerke Duisburg.
