No More Slow Old Instruments: Roy Lopez and the Gringolts Quartet show how exciting and diverse the bassoon can be.

Rui Lopes the bassoon on this CD is incredibly graceful, full of nuances, passionate, with lively expression. He has demonstrated his versatility with both historical and current works, some written specifically for his instrument. Together with the Gringolts Quartet, it shows the suitability of deep wood for strings. For example, in a wonderful piece by Edouard Du Puy, a contemporary of Beethoven from Switzerland. Or in the blues, tango nuevo and bebop vibes in the music of “Milan” by Wynton Marsalis and the tango aspects of Marcelo Nissenman and Astor Piazzolla. Composer Helena Winkelmann, who loves to juggle styles and genres, even allows the bassoon in “Gott-Fa” to emit echoes of Swiss alforn, sacred music, and funk. And the quiet Saint-SaĆ«ns was made to shine with surprising vitality. Fantastic flights, incredibly played, with lots of sonic imagination and grit.
