criticism

Issue 95 of the monthly series continues the stories of Yoda and Vader and once again doesn’t need to hide in terms of graphics. Both stories feature characters with a high level of detail, whose emotions can also be read on their faces. The panels always remain bright, and even if a lot is happening in the background, you as the reader can see it all.

In terms of story, we’re back with Yoda in the time of the High Republic, shortly after the start of Phase 1, when Yoda goes on a secret mission for a long time. This is what is shown to us here, as he defends a village against Caulcron’s invaders. He allows the villagers to build everything themselves and only intervenes when absolutely necessary. Opinions can be divided on this, but Yoda is still the teacher here. In a short sequence he also speaks to the Jedi Council, which is a very funny anecdote.

Other than that, it should be obvious to even the most experienced reader that a gang of pirates couldn’t kidnap Yoda that easily, but there’s more to it than that. Therefore, the solution with children at this stage is only partially surprising. But at least: it follows.

Vader’s story is much more compelling and continues the story that has already begun. With Palpatine’s blessing, Sabe became Vader’s number one assassin. It is no coincidence that her outfit is reminiscent of Mara Jade (Legends). But the conversation with its victim is not even the most memorable part, as it proceeds along the usual lines. The fact that she’s not the usual killer should also be made clear here, so that in the end she can’t be sure if what she’s seeing actually happened. Here too: continuity and character development follow.

Dormé, who sneaks into Vader’s house with Ochi, is convincing across the board and you can even believe that the devious Ochi wants Sabé gone. There are also a few clumsy Stormtroopers as we know them from the saga, but there’s also a tough showdown with Vader at the end that’s worth watching. So the elements of character and action are very important in this story.
