“The Brain in Art and Science” takes you to the exhibition of the same name at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn, which runs from January 28, 2022 to June 26, 2022 – and is at the same time a work of art in itself. It is dedicated primarily to the beginnings of research in our minds, which date back to the Mesolithic period. He finds the skull with drill holes as the first examples of a trepanation attest to this. From that early period, it takes the reader to the recent past, when science conducted experiments – crazy by today’s standards – to approximate how the human brain works, through amazing methods from the present to the future.
Between art and science
In addition to the organ’s history, the book covers topics ranging from mental illness, optical illusions, magic tricks, neural enhancers, and artificial intelligence. By the way, it provides an analysis of our society in different eras based on the prevailing cultures and ideas.
In the interdisciplinary narrative, brain research, philosophy, cultural studies, and science fiction stand equal side by side. The catalog also incorporates existing findings that are often not yet reversed: for example, that both hemispheres of the brain always work together and nothing happens unilaterally. The authors also discovered surprising things when they revealed, in a report by neuropsychologist Hans Otto Karnath, the reports and stories of Oliver Sacks that have been hailed as “old hat.”
Short episodes by famous scholars such as Gerhard Roth, John Dylan Haines and Michael Bowen (who comes with a philosophical perspective) illuminate the organ from different angles. But the neurosurgeon’s experiences talking to patients during brain surgery also provide exciting perspectives. Plus interviews, articles or field reports dilute the content. For example, how does the other feel that indicates direction from the north; And how this explains how the body and mind work together to create our qualitative perception.
