The Icelandic Symphony Orchestra and Eva Olikainen admirably explore the music of Anna Thorvaldsdottir with “Archora” and “Aine”.
Massive and exciting at the same time, powerful and shimmering too, flat but with inner dynamics, a fresco with very fine detail and then also plastic and saturated with color to the touch. In between there are sudden changes. The quarter-hour orchestral piece “Archura” by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir does all this. Something like this should be designed with delicate structures in mind and with a lot of patience. The Icelandic Symphony Orchestra and conductor Eva Olikainen happily succeeded. The result was overwhelming. The orchestra actually becomes a distinct object here. On the other hand, the three-movement orchestral work “Ain” admirably takes you into a magical realm of rampant sound realms, released rhythmically with roaring thunder, partly diffused in an iridescent manner. A great discovery, this music by Anna Thorvaldsdottir, happened in this interpretation.
