Review by Max Philipp Clouser – Reflections

Pianist Max Philipp Clouser has selected a repertoire for his CD debut that brings together vocal works and famous figures from literature on the piano keys.

The transcription of songs is doubly charming: it shows how expressive music can be played on the piano, and at the same time encourages virtuosity. The young pianist Max Philipp Clouser used three Schubert pieces on his first CD. That alone makes it convincing. Sparkling, lively, and tingling, sparkling and lively, for example with Liszt's transcription of Schubert's “Forelle.” Mozart's playful variations on a piece from Gluck's opera The Pilgrims of Mecca let Clouser shine with full drama. Clouser presents Wiedmann's wonderfully moody “Easy Sonatina” in a satiated and comforting way. With Szymanowski's strongly fragrant “Masks” cycle, he takes us into suggestive imaginary worlds with Scheherazade, Tristan and Don Juan in a brilliant and expressive way. A promising debut with a sophisticated compilation.
