With melancholy, delicate playing and an emphatic warm piano sound, Martin Stadtfeld spans the spectrum of feel-good Baroque music.
Martin Stadtfeld chose Baroque music for his new recording, and it is wide-ranging: it contains famous pieces such as Pachelbel’s Canon, movements from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons or Bach’s C major Prelude from the first volume of Well-Tempered Clavier, as well as pieces by composers such as Johann Kunau and Baldassare Galuppi are also interesting. It shows what a virtuoso the nimble-fingered Stadtfeld is in pieces such as the Allegro from Handel’s B minor Sonata HWV 434, but the style of most of the pieces, including his improvisations, can be described as somewhat meditative. Perhaps one should evaluate this double CD less on its purely technical aspects and think more about its purpose – as feel-good music, which can also be heard in the background, Stadtfeld’s gentle, wistful playing has a lot going for it. The warm Steinway certainly contributes to this impression.
