Review by Jonas Kaufmann – Giordano: Andrea Scheiner

Review by Jonas Kaufmann – Giordano: Andrea Scheiner

At the Bavarian State Opera, Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros performed Umberto Giordano’s “Andrea Chenier” with powerful character singing.

The decision to record this famous production on DVD came late. In the first series, Doris Soville played the Contessa de Quigny and Elena Ziglio played the old Madelon. Both presented poignant images of humanity at a time when all values had turned into their opposite. Luca Salsi in the tattered role of the servant and revolutionary Gérard was also more memorable than the beautiful singer Georges Petain. Philipp Stölzl’s production uses the psychological scent of real-life writer Umberto Giordanus in its deluge of adventure novel imagery. The camera’s proximity to the stage emphasizes the battle of materials. Above all, this DVD is a tribute to director Bachler’s dream opera couple: Anja Harterus and Jonas Kaufmann combined wit, emotion, distinctive singing, intense and strong personality in their many joint performances in Munich. Just like here.
