Politics and technology are the cause of the EU crisis

Historians like to talk about “revolutions” to describe a fundamental historical change. The so-called Neolithic Revolution made it possible for people to settle down by growing and storing plants. The age of the machine began with the industrial revolution of the eighteenth century and with it a profound shift in social and economic conditions, beginning in Europe. The digital revolution that we are currently experiencing is generally considered the third major revolution in human history. By now we may be on the cusp of a great fourth intifada – and at a crossroads as well: Transhumanism under external control or a revolution of consciousness? It is clear that both one and the other will have consequences for political systems, nation states or unions of states – including the European Union.

Who needs the European Union?

If we take the path of transhumanism, on which there are some signs, sooner or later societies are likely to change so radically that they cannot be understood by the concepts we know. This is especially true for those countries that aspire to be democratic and pluralistic. This is exactly why all this must be discussed publicly before free societies put their human heritage up for discussion. One can only hope that there will be courage to confront this debate – and not to withdraw from it by pointing to the supposed inevitability of technological developments or to systemic competition with other countries. In any case, technocratic rule would not require states as an organizational form. Also, there is no European Union.
