[PLUS] The “perfect” gaming PC for Linux

The ideal gaming PC for Linux is based on Ryzen and Radeon

Although Intel's 12th to 14th generation hybrid processors and Nvidia's existing Geforce graphics cards can also be used to create Linux PCs suitable for gaming, proponents of the free operating system typically prefer AMD CPUs and GPUs.

This is not least due to the excellent free drivers and feature set that is fully implemented in the free Mesa 3D graphics package, which also includes advanced functions such as FidelityFX Supersolution upscaling technology (“FSR”) and direct CPU access to graphics memory with Smart Memory Access (“SAM”) available in Linux. Thanks to the free Vulkan graphics driver for AMD Radeon (“RADV”), which was developed as an alternative to AMD's official Vulkan graphics driver (“AMDVLK”) and implemented directly in Mesa 3D, real-time ray tracing in Linux is accelerated and improved Significantly. Also in this regard, Linux computers with the Vulkan API no longer need to hide behind Windows computers and the Microsoft DirectX interface.

Nobara Linux as an example

As the basis of the “ideal” gaming PC under Linux, PCGH relies, as usual, on the dedicated gaming distribution Nobara Linux, available in the latest version 40 (“Fourty”) with the current free kernel Linux 6.11 and the new desktop environment KDE Plasma 6.1 is used .5.

The still relatively young Nobara project, launched by Thomas (“GloriousEggroll”) Crider, a senior software engineer at the American Linux and enterprise giant Red Hat, is building great and strong popularity among gamers. The popular Linux distribution Fedora Workstation has been converted from scratch to Nobara Linux. All important software packages are also included, which are updated after installing the operating system using the game distribution's intuitive package manager.
