New technology designed to customize content based on gameplay

Electronic Arts has filed a patent describing a system used to analyze a player’s gameplay. Accordingly, game and content suggestions should be improved.

Electronic Arts has a new one Applicable patents Provided to enable game content and recommendations based on player policy. The patent application was titled Personality Driven Dynamic Content Framework and was filed in April of this year.

Similar algorithms have been active on YouTube and similar platforms for years. Depending on the content that users watch and how often they spend their time on it, more and more content that fits a particular scheme will be served.

Electronic Arts’ patent application looks similar: According to the description, the patent relates to a system that “has the player’s personality […] Determined based on the user’s gameplay information.” Based on this, dynamic content is generated or additional product recommendations are based on the player’s personality.

Collectors, fighters and explorers

First, the program examines how a player decides to play a particular game before assigning it to different categories. In one example, the following tasks are performed in the patent specification: explorer, competitor, collector, supporter, fighter, leader, and complement.

After selecting the player character, the system can provide customized output. An example is the recommendation for other games. This allows the system to access the player’s character and compare it to the normal characters of those who are playing another game. If there are matches, then it is more likely that the previously analyzed player prefers the same ones.

Custom content

But there can also be individual modifications within the game. This allows games to be priced differently based on player behavior to create “customized content” based on gameplay.

The patent description also states that the technology can be used to “modify gameplay either to approach or away from previous experiences”. This may ensure that players get stages, puzzles, or items that better suit their playing style.

But the opposite can also be achieved: because the system will also be able to take players out of their comfort zone and present them with a greater challenge.
