Apple could use lasers in future iPhones and Watch Series devices based on its latest patent. There are several ways the technology can be used – for example to monitor air quality and capture biometric data under device displays.
- According to Apple’s own patent, future iPhones or smartwatches could contain a highly advanced laser-based component.
- The new technology will allow sensors and cameras to be placed under the screen, even on the Apple Watch.
- Air quality monitoring can also be visualized and user metrics collected.
The patent found by Patently Apple explicitly talks about HCSEL (Horizontal Cavity Emitted Laser), a hybrid optoelectronic component that attaches to the bottom of the screen of a smartwatch or smartphone. The main purpose of this device is to illuminate objects and even detect particles in the surrounding air using visible or invisible light.
HCSEL benefits over your smartphone or wearable device
Another benefit of HCSEL technology is that it allows cameras and sensors to be placed under the device’s screen. Apple TouchID or FaceID can be integrated into a device without the need for a notch or even a dark frame. Additionally, bulky parts can be eliminated and the device’s shape can be minimized or borderless viewing enabled. Apple could then save itself from trying to fit a camera into the crown of the Apple Watch.
HCSEL can also log mixed reality values and health or fitness data. The former can improve the augmented or virtual reality experience by analyzing the user’s performance during the game. This is the same functionality as the primary camera, only with laser support for more accurate results.
Ultimately, despite the promising features mentioned, that doesn’t guarantee we’ll see HCSEL in an Apple device any time soon. It may take a few years before this laser technology is used in a final product. We’ll probably find it with another manufacturer or another type of device first, since their iPhone lags in display features anyway.
