The weekly DIE ZEIT, the German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt’s Foundation and the New Institute are launching a new award with the future Helmut Schmidt Prize. In the future, this will be presented annually to an international figure who champions democracy and the common good with her important work. The Helmut Schmidt Future Prize will be awarded for the first time on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at 7pm in the Recital Hall at the Elbphilharmonie. I donated 20 thousand euros.

The jury for the Helmut Schmidt New Futuristic Prize consists of Francesca Pria (innovative economist), Carsten Prosda (senator for the Culture and Media Authority of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg), Christoph Gottschalk (The New Institute), and Uwe. Jan Hauser (DIE ZEIT) – The jury was also chaired by Max Hollen (Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art), Nina Katherine Winkoop (Bundeskanzler-Helmut-Schmidt-Stiftung) and Daniel Ziblat (Eton Professor of Government at Harvard University).

I am therefore very pleased to award this future prize in his name for the first time,” said Ue-Jeann Hauser, Chairman of the Jury, and honoring someone who opens new horizons, makes the world a better place and puts a positive stamp on its times.”

As a support program for the presentation of the Helmut Schmidt Prize for the Future, in which approximately 500 guests from society, business, politics and entertainment are expected to participate, the three collaboration partners will also organize a futuristic festival that includes events on future themes such as the environment and digitalization. Civil society, democracy and the welfare state will be a prominent part of “Lange Nacht” der ZEIT” on July 2, 2022.
