New mobile technology in Monteagle and Villandro

The new mobile technology used, DAS (Distributed Antenna System), takes mobile signals from the four mobile operators Tim, Wind, Vodafone and Iliad from existing transmission sites and transmits them to areas not served by fibre optic connections. The signals are amplified on small transmission towers erected there and transmitted via shared antennas.

“Thanks to this new technology, we are able to equip even the most remote areas with modern mobile communications in a cost-effective way and in a way that protects the landscape,” emphasizes state governor Arno Kombacher. The joint transmission of all mobile operators via a transmission system has the advantage that transmission towers can be made smaller and each individual operator does not have to build additional expensive mobile phone stations.

“With this solution, we improve digital communication and at the same time increase the security of the population. In the event of an emergency, rapid contact with the emergency services is guaranteed at all times,” says Georg Plattner, Director of RAS, pointing out further advantages.

Antennas Launched in different locations

In the municipality of Iban, mobile phone signals from all four mobile phone operators are picked up at the current transmitter site in Guerlain and transmitted via fibre optics to the lighting mast at the Runge Sports Centre and to the small transmitter masts at the Montegles campsite and at the deer sites above the small Montegles area. Common transmitter antennas for all mobile phone signals have been installed at these three sites.

To supply the area around the car park in Villanderer Alm, mobile phone signals from all four operators are transmitted to the existing transmitter site in Reinswald (municipality of Sarntal) and transmitted via the network to Villanders using the existing fibre optic connection. The signals are amplified at the transmission mast near the car park in Villanderer Alm and transmitted via a common transmitter antenna.

With DAS technology, these areas can now be better served. Data can be accessed at speeds of up to 150 megabits per second (Mbps). Emergency services can be notified more quickly, especially in emergency situations.
