In modern societies, we are in the process of gradual loss of basic freedoms that we gained so hard. And not by chance. This is the thesis put forward by quarrelsome journalist and former editor at NÖN, Gudula Walterskirchen, in her book How to Be Unfree? The Path to a Totalitarian Society.
On 240 pages, beginning with a definition of the term totalitarianism, she charts the erosion of freedom in various forms of society and covenants. She not only delves into the depths of history, but also delves into philosophy.
Walterskirchen arch extends from antiquity to the monarchy and the Nazi era to the present day, as “political correction” and “abolition of culture” increasingly restrict freedom of expression.
Walterskirchen sees the emergence of a new form of global totalitarianism – a Nordic order that argues that restrictions are only in the interest of society. The line between legitimate and arbitrary restrictions on freedom of expression appears to be fine.
The 240 pages may not come across enough, of course, freedom of expression must have its limits too – injuring or endangering people. However, “How to become not free” is certainly a good incentive to discuss our values.
