Ivan Rybošić will be the new general music director of Leipzig Opera

Croatian conductor Ivan Reposic is set to become the new general music director of Leipzig Opera. As the Opera announced on Wednesday in Leipzig, Ribosic will take up his position in the 2025/26 season. He is the successor to Ulf Schirmer, who has been general music director since 2009 and artistic director of the opera from 2011 to 2022.

Tobias Wolff, artistic director of Leipzig Opera since 2022, suggested Ribosic. He said that the Croatian’s ideas “to further develop the opera and his excellent contacts on the international scene with excellent singers” were a real asset to the management team. After completing the selection process, the City of Leipzig’s Cultural Sites Operating Committee will officially appoint Rybošić as the new General Director of Music at the end of November.

Born in 1978, Ribošić began his career in 2002 as conductor of the Croatian National Theater in Split, where he was principal conductor and director of the opera from 2006 to 2008. In Zagreb, the Croatian studied conducting with Igor Jedrov and Vikoslav Sutij. He is currently Principal Conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra, the first permanent Guest Conductor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Designated Principal Conductor of the Staatskapelle Weimar. In the past, guest visits would take him to the New National Theater in Tokyo, for example.
