Eighty-minute “Best of” from Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen: The American National Brass Band under Eun Sun Kim conducts the feat.

Richard Wagner – Of course, what could be clearer? The challenge, however, is to filter the essence from the stylized orchestral masses in Wagner’s musicals. And get them to the point in a musical ensemble. In his “Best of” eighty minutes of “Ring” for the National Brass Band, arranger Timothy Higgins not only worked on the usual orchestral interludes but also worked on some of the sound scenes. Combined orchestras from Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Nashville, New York, and Philadelphia, backed by harp, organ, and percussion, do an admirable job. Above all, they score with such agility that even the rapid running of strings and spreading orchestral shimmer succeed. The desire to experiment can be felt in every piece. Conductor Eun Soon Kim confidently channels the masses of sound and lets the sparks fly.
