Orion is a spacecraft developed by NASA for the Artemis project and future manned Mars exploration. The Orion spacecraft crew module, located on the US Navy’s amphibious landing ship USS Portland, landed at Naval Station San Diego, California on December 14 and was transported overland on December 30. Arrived at the Kennedy Space Center’s Multiple Payload Processing Facility.
Artemis 1 was an uncrewed mission, but in preparation for future missions, NASA had human mannequins and models aboard Orion to measure the effects of space radiation on the human body. At Kennedy Space Center, work is underway such as checking every part of the crew module and removing the payload. According to NASA, the seat used to mount a full-body humanoid “Campus” mannequin, as well as some of the avionics such as the GPS receiver and video processing unit, will be refurbished for the next mission, and Artemis 2 is also being used.’.
Artemis 2 is a manned test flight mission and will not land on the Moon, but the Orion spacecraft launched by the SLS will return to Earth after orbiting the back side of the Moon. The Artemis 2 mission is scheduled for May 2024. Also, as the first manned lunar exploration mission in nearly half a century, Artemis 3, in which two men and a woman land near the moon’s south pole, is scheduled for 2025.
