Nestlé said it is recalling more than 440,000 Starbucks cups sold recently. After reports of at least a dozen people suffering severe burns or cuts on their hands or fingers after using the product.

The cups are manufactured by Nestlé USA and sold as part of a Starbucks-branded holiday 2023 gift set that is sold online and at Target, Walmart and Nexcom, a military retail outlet, according to Reminder notification Published Thursday by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

In separate statement Posting online, Nestlé said it discovered the problems with the cups when consumers contacted the company. Nestlé said it took immediate action and is working closely with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission on the recall.

“The quality, safety and integrity of Nestlé USA products remain our top priority. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this action poses to both our customers and retail customers,” the company said in its statement.

Nestlé said the recall does not include any other products bearing the Nestlé USA or Starbucks brand.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said that holiday cups, if heated in the microwave or filled with hot liquid, could overheat or break, posing the risk of burns, cuts or other hazards.

As of Thursday, there were 12 reports of cups overheating or breaking, resulting in 10 injuries — including nine cases of severe burns and blisters on consumers' fingers or hands and one involving someone whose finger was cut.

The agency added that one of the injuries required medical care.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission urged consumers to stop using the cups immediately and return them to the point of purchase for a full refund in cash or gift card. Full refunds are also available at Nestlé website.
