Microsoft is reorganizing its Xbox gaming and marketing leadership

Following its recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft is reportedly streamlining its leadership of Xbox gaming and marketing. Microsoft will promote Matt Booty to head of gaming and studio content, according to an internal memo seen by Microsoft the edge.

Booty currently serves as president of Microsoft Studios and Xbox Game Studios, a role he has held since 2018, according to his LinkedIn page. His expanded role at Microsoft Gaming now includes video game holding company ZeniMax and Fallout publisher Bethesda.

Microsoft aims to enable Xbox Game Studios and ZeniMax development studios to effectively collaborate together, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has reportedly said.

As part of its leadership shake-up, Sarah Bond, corporate vice president of Microsoft Xbox, will be promoted to president of Xbox. In her new role, Bond will be responsible for Xbox’s hardware and software platforms with responsibilities in strategy, business development and platform architecture to name a few, according to LinkedIn.

Regarding marketing, Chief Marketing Officer Chris Capossella will step down after 32 years at Microsoft.

“The opportunity to spend many years at Microsoft and work with Satya [Nadella] “I’m taking on the role of CEO, transforming the company into a cloud and AI powerhouse. It’s an incredible gift that I don’t take for granted,” Capossella said on LinkedIn.

Taking the reins from Capossela is Takeshi Nomoto, who has been involved in marketing roles at Microsoft since 1997. Nomoto first joined Microsoft as part of the Windows software management team and managed a variety of office marketing projects before working his way up to executive vice president. Microsoft is also promoting Yousef Mahdi to the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Consumer Marketing Officer. Mehdi first joined Microsoft in 1992 where he worked in product management for Internet Explorer and Windows before helping lead Microsoft’s foray into search with Bing.

In the latest acquisition, Microsoft’s plans to acquire Activision Blizzard were revealed in January 2022 and received approval from the British government after Microsoft agreed to sell the streaming rights to Activision games amid competition concerns, according to Reuters. The acquisition reportedly cost US$69 billion.
