Less wood, longer burning time
The amount of fuel used by the test subjects in this experiment was weighed. After training, test participants used less wood. However, the time it takes for this wood to burn has increased by up to 80 percent. there
Simon Lecce sees a significant increase in efficiency, which ultimately leads to savings on firewood and therefore costs.
Common mistakes when heating with wood
There were gaps in knowledge among test participants, especially when it came to the topic of air supply and the proper amount of wood in the kiln.
Another important tip: lighting “from above”. Unless the stove manufacturer specifies otherwise, you should place two stove-sized pieces of firewood on the grate, stack kindling sticks crosswise on top and place the lighter in the middle.
This means that less fuel is actively involved in the heating phase and fewer flammable gases are produced. This reduces pollutants entering the environment through the chimney.
11.5 million opportunities to save energy and reduce emissions
Information displays for owners of private wood stoves should be improved. With 11.5 million single-chamber heaters in Germany, the user impact is serious, explains heating expert Simon Lecce.
TFZ, in cooperation with other research institutions, the Federal Environment Agency and local authorities, is looking for new ways to reach as many oven owners as possible.
There are currently regular heating training courses at TFZ in Straubing, both on site and online. Additionally, on-site chimney sweeps are a good contact for anyone who would like specific advice on how to properly heat with wood.
