When Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini committed to electric mobility in the spring of 2023 and announced the first specific model shortly after, only die-hard fans were surprised. There will be hybrids for a transition period until the first all-electric Lamborghini is scheduled to roll off the production line in 2028.
The manufacturer, known for its V10 and V12 combustion engines, also needs batteries in the short, medium and long term to power the cars' electric motors. Against this background, Lamborghini announces that it will choose the model Cobalt-free battery technology from MIT decided and obtained the corresponding patent licenses. The car manufacturer had already given advance notice Participate financially in research work.
The new battery technology is based on well-known lithium-ion batteries. The difference is that the cathode can be produced without rare earth materials such as cobalt and nickel. Instead, the batteries developed by MIT use organic materials. There should also be advantages in terms of shipping speed and production costs, the researchers reported.
