Jon Hamm is an amnesiac archangel who went missing in Soho in the Good Omens S2 trailer

Trailer for the second season of Good omen.

We loved the 2019 Prime Video TV adaptation of Good omenthe classic 1990 satirical fantasy novel by Neil Gaiman and the The late Terry Pratchett. Stars David Tennant and Michael Sheen are perfectly portrayed as a demon and an angel teaming up to avert Armageddon. But is it possible to recapture that magic in a second season, especially when it was originally supposed to be a six-parter? limited series? The official trailer has just been released, and we hope the answer is yes.

(Spoilers for the S1 below.)

As I wrote earlier, Good omen It is the story of the angel, Aziraphale (Sheen), and the demon, Crowley (Tennant), who gradually become friends over thousands of years and team up against the forces of Heaven and Hell to save Earth from destruction. They’ve become somewhat fond of the Earth and all the humans in it with its many foibles, you see — not to mention the perks that come with our big blue crime, like nifty electronics and quaint little restaurants where they get to know you. The supernatural pair really don’t want to set up the Antichrist – an 11-year-old boy named Adam (Sam Taylor Buck) who grew up unaware of his pivotal role in the coming apocalypse – to end it all.

Good omen It was a huge success, garnering mostly rave reviews, including reviews from Ars. As I noted in my review, Gaiman’s obvious, fierce, deep love for the project (he served as executive producer) made the series so much fun to watch. Tennant and Sheen had great on-screen chemistry and brought their characters to vivid life. It’s hard to imagine a more exemplary foil for Tennant’s brash, irreverent demon than Sheen’s restless, suave angel who frets over his divided loyalties. Their friendship is very much the heart of the tale, and it mirrors that of Gaiman and Pratchett in many respects. The marriage of the dark vision of the former and the light comic sensibility of the latter produced the best of both worlds in the novel.

The first season perfectly covered all the events of the book. So I was skeptical at first when rumors spread that a second season was in the works. By June 2021, the news it was officialWith Gaiman’s explanation on his blog That is, in fact, he and Pratchett had already plotted a sequel to Good omen In 1989, just before the novel was published. Still struggling, the authors were sharing a room at the World Fantasy Convention in Seattle. Jet lag kept them up late, so the idea for a sequel was born. They had every intention of writing it together. But then Gaiman published the first Sandman graphic novel, and Pratchett unleashed the Discworld series, “and there was no good time” after that.

In fact, parts of the sequel ended up in S1 (“Herce Our Angels Come”). Pratchett passed away in 2015 and he never got to see their shared vision come to life on TV. But he has been clear about his desire to adapt to television. “He wanted the story to be told,” Gaiman wrote, “and if that worked, he wanted the rest of the story to be told.” And here we are eagerly awaiting the S2.

Miranda Richardson returns in a new role as the demon Shax.

Naturally, Sheen and Tennant both return. Jon Hamm also returns as the dapper Archangel Gabriel, the matte final bureaucrat, along with Don MacKeichan and Gloria O’Biano as Archangels Michael and Uriel, respectively. Miranda Richardson delighted viewers as the part-time medium and courtesan Madame Tracy. She also returned for the second season but in a new role as the demon Shax. New cast members include Maggie Service as Maggie, Nina Sosanya as Nina, Liz Carr as the angel Seraqel, Quillin Sepulveda as the angel Muriel, and Shelley Cohn as the demon Beelzebub (played in the first season by Anna Maxwell Martin).

According to the official introduction:

Having been on Earth from the start, and with the apocalypse thwarted, the duo return to an easy life among humans in London’s Soho. That is, until Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) shows up unexpectedly at the door of Aziraphale’s library with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As Crowley warns why the Archangel has come to the library, Aziraphale is anxious to solve the mystery behind Gabriel’s condition. However, the Archangel’s hiding from Heaven and Hell soon disrupts their lives in unexpected ways. To solve this mystery and thwart Heaven and Hell in the process, the duo will need more than a miracle; They will again need to rely on each other.

The trailer opens, as it should, with Crowley heading towards the Aziraphale Library. He says, “I’m back.” Shax informs Crowley that Gabriel has disappeared, and appears naked in the library. The two friends decide to hide it until they can find out what’s going on. Heaven sends the angel Muriel to Earth to investigate, and the angel states that there is nothing wrong, just Aziraphale (“the traitor”), his “grumpy friend” Crowley, and the angel’s assistant – Gabriel in disguise. It looks like hapless Muriel might become an ally, even sneaking Crowley into Heaven. And did Aziraphale inadvertently start a war? “Oh, hell wouldn’t like that,” Crowley snickers.

The second season of Good omen Premieres on Prime Video on July 28, 2023.
