Children’s theater in Rostock-Warnemünde: Is ‘The Cow Rosmarie’ worth it?
Rostock.Saturday morning, 11 am! Perhaps not the usual time for artists to be on stage. But the children were already full of hopes. The two actors picked them up with music from the lobby of the mini-comedy Warnemünde. So the music went up the stairs into the hall. The children came with their parents – a family show from Rostock Volkstheater, which will be strengthened in the future.

Constant changes in roles bring speed
“Die Kuh Rosmarie” is a play with many roles, but in this case only for two actors. A challenge to both Lev Semenov and Felix Thewanger, but also to fashion designer Franziska Just. Constant changes in roles require a brief disguise, but they must be taken off quickly. This pace of change was part of the appeal.
The family play was adapted for small theater by Andri Beyeler, based on the popular picture book “The Cow Rosalinde” by Frauke Nahrgang and Winfried Opgenoorth. Directed by Daniel Pfluger, with music by John R Carlson.

A cow annoys other animals
About the material: The farmer finds it difficult to deal with the Rosmarie cow. She just knows better. However, the beautiful rural life is deeply disturbed. The adorable little farm looks like something out of a picture book – with pigs, chickens, and even goldfish.
But the cow, who knows everything better, is annoying. For example, the pig is very dirty, and the chicken is chattering too. Finally, the farmer resorts to an emergency solution: he sends the annoying animal to Africa by plane. Even cows can fly if they have to. This means that the farm is quiet at the moment. Nobody complains anymore. Life can be very beautiful, including country life.
Return visit comes from Africa
But not for long. Since new animals will appear soon, it is unusual for a German farm. Crocodile, giraffe, elephant and lion enrich rural life one by one. As it turns out, the animal world of Africa is now disturbed by the guest from Europe and some are migrating. He seems to be getting very stressed out there because a certain cow, Rosemary, is bothering the animals.

The visit naturally evokes the local farm. New guests are quite strange, but they are warmly welcomed, even if there are problems at first.
We welcome the challenge for the actors
The two actors manage all this with rapid changes in costumes and roles, and at times it seems improvised. The play presents a welcome challenge for Lev Semenov and Felix Thewanger, who often use suggested gestures to give the animal (as well as the farmer) the necessary shape. They also make kids laugh – sometimes even without words.
After all, this family piece is a plea for indulgence, but without a finger raised. The diversity of animals may be symbolic of a colorful community – everyone must coexist with each other in one way or another. The proverb was simple but sure: What animals can do, man must also be able to do. Children in particular let themselves drift away into fits of laughter, and adults felt well entertained.
