Ian Postridge and Lars Vogt-Schubert review: Xuanningsang

Tenor Ian Postridge and pianist Lars Vogt created Schubert’s album that each chord contains a bit of drama.

The two artists cast sharp eagle glances at the viewers of the cover cartoons showing them aging. This is misleading, because they make music with an empathetic and honest nature. They both have life experience, but they are far from old enough. The recordings, made in November 2021 at Wigmore Hall, became a precious legacy for the man who succumbed to cancer on September 5th. Lars Vogt. Student Bostonridge beyond the scope of his outstanding knowledge about Schubert To detect. Tones, which are pale though full, unforgettable, unbelievable sadness in the word “bliss”, doubts and longing for harmony emanate from the depths of the soul. Vogt and Postridge are experts in Schubert’s world. For this reason, only Dietrich Fischer-Diskau, who knows songs as well as before him, sings with the rich tone of certainty and affirmation of knowledge. Vogt and Postridge don’t have to search for the abyss, because they are simply there. Vogt, too, took the contrasts with a soft, succinct gesture that is at the same time smarter and more comprehensive than the broad melodramatic gloom. In moments of happiness there is fear of loss and time. Every note and every chord has a little bit of drama that gains depth through the occasional. This means that “Schwanengesang”, actually a compilation of his publisher’s latest compositions for the Schubert song, is gaining significant weight alongside “Winterreise” and “Die Schöne Müllerin”.
