It's no secret that social interaction is one of the pillars of happiness. In fact, positive relationships keep us satisfied and healthy, and can help us live longer, according to an 85-year Harvard University happiness study.
The path to building or maintaining strong relationships in your life, especially as an adult, may seem mysterious.
Earlier this week, Esther Perel told Ten Percent Happier podcast host Dan Harris There is one thing people can do today to increase their happiness and forge stronger bonds: ask someone out tonight.
Beryl is a Belgian-American psychiatrist known for her best-selling books and widely watched TED Talks Podcast “Where should we start?” Which focuses on intimacy and relationships.
“People may often be busy three weeks before, but not as busy the day after.” She says to Harris. “It's amazing how many people will spend the night at home.”
You don't have to arrange an elaborate outing in order to invite someone else. If your plan is to stay in and cook, you probably know someone who would like to do that with you.
“You go swimming, you call someone, you go to the gym, you call someone,” Beryl says. “There's always someone who needs someone who will go anyway in order to do the thing they want to do, but won't do it alone because they're on the couch.”
If you don't know who to call, Beryl He proposes to Harris Ask yourself some questions:
- Who do you owe a phone call to?
- To whom do you owe an apology?
- Who do you want to go for a walk with?
Answering any of these questions will lead you to the person you might want to connect with on a deeper level.
Even if someone isn't planning to be social that night, they'll probably appreciate the company. “I've never known anyone who went and regretted it afterwards,” Beryl says.
