Gwyneth Paltrow Trial Updates: Goop mogul owes Terry Sanderson $3.2 million for lost magic in a skiing accident, lawyers say

Shay Sanderson accuses Gwyneth Paltrow of ‘ignoring’ her father in a skiing accident

Gwyneth Paltrow’s trial over a 2016 skiing crash prepares to hear closing arguments Thursday.

The case dragged on for years after retired ophthalmologist Terry Sanderson, 76, raised the allegations against Paltrow in a 2019 lawsuit. Sanderson claims the Hollywood star hit him on the slopes at the luxury Deer Valley resort near Park City, Utah, on February 26, 2016.

Sanderson, who is seeking $300,000 in damages, says the collision left him with a permanent traumatic brain injury that robbed him of his “fun for life.” Paltrow claims it was Sanderson who bumped into Paltrow’s pillow — she’s seeking a token $1 and covering her legal costs.

During closing arguments Thursday, Sanderson’s attorney, Lawrence Buehler, said that for 16 hours each day, Sanderson is forced to live with the consequences of his brain injury. Mr. Bhuler randomly suggested that jurors consider awarding his client $33 per hour that he has been experiencing cognitive decline since the accident seven years ago, and for the ten years he is estimated to live.

“I’m going to suggest a number. Enter the number you think is fair to Terry. The full value of the damage and losses he deals with every day. I’d say $33,” Buehler said.

According to Buehler’s formula, Sanderson must be awarded $3.2 million — the amount he initially bid to get in 2019 before Judge Holmberg lowered the amount to $300,000.

Defense: We want our dollars

“Let me go back to Lady Justice,” said Mr. Owens. “We talked about blindfolds, and we talked about scales.”

He went on to say, “We want you to use the sword, it seems harsh now because we don’t cut off our heads anywhere. The sword is to defend an unfounded claim.”

“Don’t throw a $3 million bomb in the courtroom, call it King Kong and walk away. You don’t reward that.”

“…and we want our dollar.”

Plaintiff’s attorneys tell the jury that Sanderson is owed $3.2 million

Buehler argued that for 16 hours each day, Sanderson is forced to live with the consequences of the meltdown.

Pooler argued that although there was no value to Mr. Sanderson’s quality of life, he randomly suggested that jurors consider awarding him $33 per hour, as he had suffered cognitive decline since the accident seven years earlier, and for the ten years he is estimated to live . .

“There are lawyers and experts here… some of them make $300 or $500 an hour,” Buehler said. “I’m going to suggest a number. Enter the number you think is fair to Terry. The full value of the damage and losses he deals with every day. I’ll say $33.”

Attorney Lawrence Bowler says Sanderson’s injuries are ‘for life’

Buehler told jurors that Sanderson would have to deal with an “invisible brain injury” for the rest of his life.

“It lasts a lifetime,” said Mr. Buehler.

“When people get to know him, after a while they don’t want to deal with him anymore.”
