(Reuters) – Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on Thursday defended the league’s tradition of playing matches at Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but five player substitutions per game must be allowed according to a tough schedule.
Europe’s major leagues have adopted the rule to increase substitutions to five to ease the burden on players amid the Covid-19 pandemic, but league clubs voted against the measure.
While most leagues take a winter break, English clubs will have three match dates between December 26 and January 2. But with more matches postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak, Guardiola said it was time for the league to adapt to the circumstances.
“We want to protect the players, so we must bring in all five substitutes. It is much better because of the number of matches, but the Premier League and clubs decided ‘no’,” Guardiola said before the match against Leicester City away at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
