This is near the center of globular cluster “M55” (Messier 55, NGC 6809) which lies about 20,000 light-years away in the “arc” direction. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), M55 is about 100 light-years across, and the number of stars that make up the cluster is about 100,000.
A globular cluster is a celestial body in which tens of thousands to millions of stars are gathered into a spherical shape. About 150 globular clusters have been discovered so far in the Milky Way. A beautiful-looking globular cluster of denser stars near the center.
This image was created based on data acquired by the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope. According to NASA, M55 is relatively large and bright, but it’s not perfect because it doesn’t have a dense core, and because it appears low in the Northern Hemisphere, which makes it vulnerable to atmospheric and light pollution. Observation is said to be difficult under conditions without
The Hubble Space Telescope, which continues to observe in low Earth orbit, which is unaffected by the atmosphere, has captured individual stars for M55, including faint stars that cannot be seen with ground-based telescopes.
The name M55 means that it was recorded as the 55th object in the ‘Messier Catalog’, a collection of nebulae and star clusters by the 18th century French astronomer Charles Messier.
NASA released the first image on March 17, 2023 as one of the Messier objects captured by the Hubble Space Telescope.
