Dusseldorf, Berlin Germany lags behind in the international innovation race. This is confirmed by a new study by the Confederation of German Industries (BDI) and consultancy Roland Berger, previously available to Handelsblatt.

In the new figures, Germany ranks only 10th in terms of innovation capacity – behind countries such as Switzerland, Singapore and Denmark. Even Germany has lagged behind when it comes to developing major new technologies such as computer chips or artificial intelligence.

According to experts, the main reason for Germany’s innovation problem is poor communication between scientific institutions and the economy.

The study shows that universities and companies in Germany do significantly less research all together compared to other countries. In addition, the economy invests its money in further development of current products rather than in future technologies.
