Men pretending to be women while playing video games and get showered with hate in seconds. The Through Their Eyes campaign starkly exposes sexual harassment.
Hamburg – Gamers aren’t pale kids in the basement banging hard on keyboards. Cliches have long been worn out. However, a new YouTube video shows how redneck men confront women who gamble. Sexual harassment, insults, and more are hurled at two males speaking in female voices. Real or fake?
Men are instantly victims of sexual harassment if they gamble as a woman for 5 seconds
What was that “experience”? What would it be like if men were suddenly seen as women in shooting? so asks the cosmetics brand Maybelline (a subsidiary of the multi-billion dollar group L’Oréal). You can – unfortunately – imagine it, but the Through Their Eyes campaign shows what sexism women have to experience day in and day out when playing games.
- Confessional guys Joel and Drew gamble online normally, but digitally they’re given a female voice. The talented gamer has more than 12 million followers.
- Immediately after “mistaking” themselves as a woman, streamers are kicked out of matches or their teammates leave in the lobby in the middle of a match.
- “Shut up bitchFlying comes off as an insult less than 5 seconds after speaking in a female voice. By the way, anything but cute requests to keep the feminine mouth shut come in constant fire.
- But it doesn’t stop with a ban on the mouth. You guessed it, the voices flirt with a woman’s voice broadcaster really clumsily and now they want to be called “dad”.
- Sexist sayingsGo back to the sinkorGo cleanIt also causes earbleeds. It’s sad that the entire lobby usually laughs when such a ‘joke’ is dropped.
Why do women still gamble? The seasoned men, who had only been outside in women’s shoes for a few moments, gasped for air. At the end of the session, one of the players asked moderator Amber how she, as a woman, could continue to gamble at all after apparently facing such harassment. Then the woman said sincerely about the toys: “Because I love them!” Here you can watch the video on YouTube:
Men pretending to be women online – they get overwhelmed after 5 seconds
is this real? no. The shooting scenes shown in the video are not real – it is what it is Warfare Simulator on PC, which you can treat as stock footage for about 75 euros. It can also be doubted whether the dialogues are real, but the situation is quite real.
In our editorial office, women immediately confirmed every cliché stated in the video and admitted that they had tried everything themselves. So, although the scenes in the YouTube video are fake, the problem behind them is real. And that’s exactly what the Through Theier Eyes campaign wants to draw attention to.
Professional players pretend to be women: they must “go clean up” and “shut up”
Really not an isolated case: At the end of 2022, three Argentinian esports professionals in Valorant disguised themselves as women, just like in the video above. The result was almost the same. The only difference: the section was not in English, but now in Spanish. Here you can see excerpts from the “Women in Games Argentina” social experiment:
The campaign video isn’t about the “normal” insults players hurl at each other in the heat of the moment that are part of the “good” tone. No, they have been targeted with sexual insults or sexual harassment. By the way, the video commenting function on YouTube is deactivated – why?
