Billionaire and arts patron, Hansjörg Wyss, has received the Gallatin Prize from the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce for his services to science.
Over the past ten years, Wyss has donated more than half a billion Swiss francs to research projects at the Wyss Centers in Zurich and Geneva and the Wyss Academy in Bern.
His donations have made medical technology entrepreneur Wyss the most generous private donor to Swiss research. Research Minister Guy Parmelin paid tribute, the University of Zurich announced on Tuesday.
Each of the Wyss research institutes works closely with institutions such as the Federal Institutes of Technology and the Universities of Geneva, Zurich and Berne. According to the information, 25 companies in the fields of robotics for medicine have been supported or established from the centers.
The Chamber of Commerce Gallatin Prize is awarded to individuals who have brought Switzerland and the United States together. It commemorates Albert Gallatin, who was born in Geneva in 1761 and was the longest-serving Secretary of the Treasury in the United States between 1801 and 1814. He also founded New York University and the Bank of New York.
