dSPACE supports college racing teams as the exclusive in-ring software technology sponsor

dSPACE, one of the world's leading providers of simulation and validation solutions, is expanding its partnership with the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) and will in the future support college racing teams with not only hardware, but also simulation software. The world's fastest self-driving race cars have been racing on legendary race tracks around the world using dSPACE's on-board computers for more than a year. In the future, university teams will also be able to use dSPACE's software-in-the-loop (SIL) solutions and receive training and technical support. Using SIL simulations, racing teams can train their “AI drivers” in a virtual environment to make them more reliable, safe and fast.

As the official software-in-the-loop technology sponsor of IAC, dSPACE provides its own SIMPHERA solutions. SIMPHERA is a powerful framework that includes simulation models, test automation, test analysis and simulation platform and can integrate other components such as HIL simulators. Virtual testing environments for desktop and cloud use provide teams with full access to all components of the individually configurable framework. For example, you can replace components of open simulation models with your own models. Teams can simply upload their self-developed AI-based control software, called AI Drivers, to the cloud and perform driving dynamics tests on the spot. In the future, the partnership is also looking to provide demonstrations of sensor simulation.

dSPACE is already the exclusive on-board computer technology sponsor and provides on-board computers for IAC. For a year now, every IAC race car has been running using the dSPACE AUTERA AutoBox. The system has proven to be a robust, reliable and robust mainframe. It reads data from lidar sensors, radar and cameras as well as buses and networks within vehicles, processes it and provides real-time controls and commands for fully autonomous race cars traveling at speeds in excess of 300 km/h.

“In the first year of our partnership with IAC, we were able to experience how efficiently and enthusiastically teams can use leading-edge technologies to further develop their race cars. Now that AUTERA AutoBox has established itself as the mastermind of the IAC race car, we are now taking the next step of providing university teams with tracks Virtual race. With software-in-the-loop solutions, we provide IAC teams with powerful tools with which they can gain early insights that ultimately make a difference to win IAC races,” explains Dr. Carsten Hoff, CEO of dSPACE.

“dSPACE is an important partner of IAC and plays a crucial role in the development of the world's fastest autonomous race car. As we expand our collaboration, dSPACE is providing a customized version of its SIMPHERA-SIL product, a world-class high-fidelity simulation tool, which provides university teams with “A true digital twin of IAC's race cars and track environment. The partnership enables true learning to be moved from simulation to reality, unlocking the full potential of 'AI drivers' for maximum safe, high-speed automation,” said Paul Mitchell, President of the Independent Indy Challenge.
