DC's legendary band HFStival is back, with an amazing rock lineup

Pull your faded striped shirts and rolled-up sunglasses out of storage: It's time. HFStival is coming back to D.C., so you can go back to the '90s, too — if you get tickets to the Sept. 21 festival at Nationals Park.

HFStival, launched by alternative rock station WHFS in 1990, was Washington's biggest concert of the year in the 1990s and early 2000s. Bands like No Doubt, Violent Femmes, and the Ramones filled RFK Stadium with electric sounds and screaming fans.

By the mid-1990s, attendance exceeded 50,000, with tickets selling out in less than two hours. Now, IMP, parent company of the 9:30 Club, is bringing bands laced with nostalgia ('90s and 2000s) to Nationals Park. When the revived HFStivals were staged at Merriweather Post Pavilion in 2010 and 2011, they relied heavily on 1990s-era lineups, and this year was no different.

Here's who's coming to HFStival 2024:

  • Postal service.
  • Death cabin for cutie.
  • the nightmare.
  • shrub.
  • garbage.
  • Jimmy ate the world.
  • Girl talk.
  • Violent women.
  • tonic.
  • Purifier.
  • lit.

HFStival veterans will note that this is the first time the festival has had a single stage since 1993 – and later featured up to four stages, including a dance tent – and the first time since 1990 that no local bands have appeared on stage. Advertiser. Lined up. (Was Jimmy's Chicken Shack out of stock?)

In a statement to The Washington Post, Gene Haas, IMP's co-director of booking, said, “HFStival represents a nostalgic moment in time for a lot of people. The festival has always been known for its heavy rock leanings, but then you'd see Coldplay, Jewel or Tony Bennett emcee The line-up too…we wanted to bring together bands that were part of the original HFStival, as well as bands that never had a chance to play but went on to build a legacy career – all for one day on one stage.”
