Dangbi Home ProjectorDangbe N2It is a home projector that was launched in Japan in May of this year. This product features full HD resolution and can be projected onto the ceiling, allowing for flexible installation, and is officially licensed by Netflix.

At the time of writing, the assembled model with a special stand that allows for ceiling display is selling at electronics stores and e-commerce sites for 58,800 yen (tax included).

The manufacturer lent me a product for review, and I used it at home for about 10 days. If you compare the specifications only, the “Dangbei N2” is not as good as the flagship model, the 4K laser projector “Dangbei DBOX02”, which was released at the same time. However, it was a refreshing experience to be able to easily carry it around the living room, dining room and bedroom, and easily enjoy clear and beautiful images with high sound quality on the walls and ceiling. The N2 is an eye-opening home projector that allows you to easily enjoy video work on a large screen even in a small room.

Standard specifications for a mid-range home projector

Last year, Dangbei, a brand of projector products developed by Hangzhou Dangbei Network Technology, a startup founded in 2013, released a product called “Emotn N1” as a mid-range home projector.

The “Dangbei N2” we will be reviewing this time is the follow-up model. The flagship model “Dangbei DBOX02” released at the same time features 4K resolution and a laser light source of 2450 lumens ISO, while the Dangbei N2 has a native resolution of 1080P/Full HD and uses an LED light source (LCD (Liquid Transmission Crystal Display) system) and a brightness of 400 lumens ISO.

Last year, I reviewed the high-end Mars Pro on DogsorCaravan, and I was blown away by the clear 4K video, so I thought I wouldn’t be completely surprised by the mid-range Dangbei N2, but actually… it looks good when I use it. In fact, the picture quality is quite satisfactory for someone who doesn’t have a well-equipped home theater. Additionally, the “InstanPro AI Image Adjustment Technology” automatically corrects the projection so that it won’t be projected diagonally even if you change the installation location, and it will be focused in a fixed position, so you can easily get high-quality images even if you change the viewing location comfortably for you to enjoy.

Attractive small size and freedom of installation

The Dangbei N2 is compact, measuring 197mm x 130mm x 107mm and weighing 2.18kg. There is a kickstand on the front side of the bottom where the lens is located, allowing for a slight tilt, but a dedicated projector mount will expand your mounting options and viewing surface.

Attach it to the projector stand using the 1/4″ tripod mount hole on the bottom of the N2. When placed on the stand, the height is about 28cm and the weight is 3.29kg. The arm that supports the N2 moves with light force and can be stopped perfectly, so you can easily choose the viewing angle. The rotation range is 210 degrees up and down. With this projector stand, you can easily project images onto the ceiling of your room.

InstanPro AI image adjustment technology enables clear viewing even at a slight angle.

The projector that projects an image on the front through the lens must be placed directly in front of the screen, otherwise the image will be distorted. All projectors have a function to correct distorted images. The Dangbei N2 has a camera on the front of the body, which was not present in its predecessor, and in conjunction with the traditional ToF (time of flight) remote image sensor, it allows for more precise adjustments. The “automatic autofocus” and “automatic keystone correction” functions can now be adjusted more precisely, and features that have been included in high-end models such as “automatic screen recognition” and “automatic obstacle avoidance function” have also been included. End. Dangbei calls the technology that enables this advanced projected image adjustment “InstanPro AI Image Adjustment Technology.”

When the N2 is actually turned on, it first displays an image that looks like a test pattern of black and white squares, then automatically adjusts the focus and corrects the trapezoid on the top, bottom, left, and right sides. It's also smart enough to turn the image left or right to avoid furniture or lighting fixtures in front of it. The GIF video below shows how to move the main unit to change the viewing angle and automatically correct the trapezoid shape of the image.

However, if you live in a living room or bedroom, you may not be able to adjust the settings fully automatically. In this case, you can also use the remote control to make detailed manual adjustments from the settings menu. First, use the zoom settings to reduce the screen from the default 100% to the appropriate size. Then, you can use the keystone settings to move each of the four corners of the image up, down, left, and right to make it a perfect square.

Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube have built-in apps, and other apps can be enjoyed via HDMI.

If you look at the Dangbei N2's menu screen after setting the picture appearance, you'll find it has a simple configuration, with a large Netflix logo on the left edge, and Amazon Prime Video and YouTube logos next to it.

These apps have built-in apps, and when you start the app, you can log in to your account for each service, and then you can enjoy the video working just like you would on a smartphone or computer. You can also log in to the Dangbei N2 app from your smartphone by scanning the QR code with your smartphone camera. Once you register your account, it is saved, so you don't have to worry about logging in every time you use it.

There are other services listed, and there is also an app called the App Store, but there seem to be few services that Japanese users are familiar with. In this area, it falls short of the flagship “DBOX02” equipped with Google TV.

However, since it has an HDMI port for external input, you can use familiar services by connecting Amazon's Fire TV, Apple TV, or the recently introduced Google TV Streamer. Of course, you can also connect devices such as hard disk recorders and game consoles to the Dangbei N2 via HDMI.

Screen sharing is compatible with Miracast for Windows and Android, and AirPlay for Apple devices.

Summary – The Dangbei N2 is an excellent home projector that can flexibly adapt to the real living environments of many people.

Last year, I tried out the Mars Pro and was impressed with the latest advances in projectors, seeing bright images even in the daytime and deep blacks. However, these flagship models are large and heavy, so they’re generally designed to be placed in a dedicated spot in a room set up as a home theater (ideally, suspended from the ceiling).

However, in reality, there are many places where you would want to set up a room and use the wall as a screen to watch video content whenever you want to watch it, in a room the size of about 6 to 10 tatami mats. Thanks to its small size and portability from room to room, the Dangbei N2 is a standard and excellent projector that can be found in many homes. Of course, there are plenty of opportunities for activity even in small offices. Specifications such as light source type and cavity size alone do not determine the quality of a home projector.

In this review, I watched a live stream of the Olympics projected onto a wall using the N2 (HDMI input from a hard drive recorder), and it had a different immersive feel than watching it on a smartphone or TV. This is recommended for those who feel that a projector doesn't fit their living environment.
