Startups as military suppliers

Young technology companies such as drone company Quantum Systems and missile developer HyImpulse want to supply the German armed forces. But every start is difficult.

Neuberg Florian Seibel says his pulse reached 180. Then, halfway through the panel discussion, he pulled a carrot out of his pants pocket: “The Bundeswehr and BAAINBw have been holding this carrot against our noses for five years,” the drone businessman complained in the hall.

The BAAINBw is the Bundeswehr’s procurement office and thus the authority that every businessman who wants to outfit German soldiers – be it with tanks or stockings – must bypass. Or by drones. However, in Seibel’s experience, there is no primary way for startups to gain access to the power found in Koblenz.
