LONDON – Buckingham Palace announced on Wednesday that British King Charles III will undergo a “corrective procedure” in hospital next week after being treated for an enlarged prostate.
The statement read: “Like thousands of men every year, the king seeks treatment for enlarged prostate.” “His Majesty’s condition is benign and he will be admitted to hospital next week for a corrective operation.”
“The 75-year-old king's public engagements will be postponed for a short period to recover,” she added. He was expected to attend a series of meetings and events in Scotland on Friday, but they have been postponed.
A Buckingham Palace source told NBC News that Charles “was keen to share details of his diagnosis to encourage other men who may be experiencing symptoms to get tested, in line with public health advice.”
The news comes on the same day it was announced that Kate, Princess of Wales, had undergone planned abdominal surgery and will remain in hospital for up to two weeks.
A statement issued by Kensington Palace in London said that the 42-year-old wife of Prince William, the eldest son of Charles and heir to the throne, will take a long break from her usually busy schedule of public appearances and private engagements.
Charles assumed the throne after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September 2002 at the age of 96 after sitting on the throne for a record 70 years.
She was 27 when she was crowned in 1953, a historic moment that marked her still-new television debut. In contrast, Charles was a veteran member of the royal family, and he traveled around the world several times representing the country, before his coronation, at the age of 73.
Since then, he has faced a number of challenges, including controversy surrounding his brother Prince Andrew's relationship with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The publication of Prince Harry's book “Spare” last year also sparked unwelcome attention from the royal family.
