Space inspires people’s imagination and creativity. The plans to conquer the universe became more and more daring. They are targeting more and more distant targets. Mars has long been in the range of remote-controlled rovers. It is expected that they will represent only the vanguard of the first visit of humans to the Red Planet. At the same time, the richest people, such as Elon Musk and Richard Branson, are not entirely out of place in working out how to turn space tourism into a new business district. The conquest of the vastness of the universe is in full swing.
gateway to the expansion of the universe
Astronomer Dirk Lorenzen, in his book The New Race to Space, lays out what is planned in current projects for the conquest of space, as well as what envisioned plans haunt the minds of engineers. In his book, he skillfully builds a bridge from the history of space travel to the vastly improved modern technology of projects, which wide open the gates to the vastness of the universe.
We’ve always had concrete ideas about what a lunar base should look like. One thing is clear: you have to cover it with plenty of moon dust to keep out harmful radiation. So life occurs in lunar soil. Likewise, we now know not only about the physical stresses, but also the psychological stresses of astronauts who are supposed to stay longer on Earth’s satellite. The concepts were developed to make life on the moon base as comfortable as possible for people without eventually hitting their heads. Lorenzen presents in his book international research projects dealing with the permanent settlement of the moon.
One chapter is about the conquest of Mars. Lorenzen explains what is actually technologically possible on the Red Planet, which is at least 55 million km away from us. The highlight of the high-tech missions is currently a small helicopter that recently explored Mars independently of the NASA Perseverance rover. In this context, Lorenzen displays the most beautiful high-resolution images that devices such as Perseverance or Curiosity have sent to Earth.
