Innovative fuel cell truck used in environmentally friendly transportation

Mannheim / Krefeld. August 21, 2024.
Today, BAUHAUS, in cooperation with the shipping company Nolden Logistics, officially presented the first innovative fuel cell truck to the public at the BAUHAUS Central European Depot in Krefeld. In the future, the truck will provide an environmentally friendly alternative for freight transport in the Rhine-Ruhr area. With this step, BAUHAUS is underlining its commitment to sustainability and climate protection, which begins with logistics and freight transport.

Sustainable Innovation on Wheels: The Hydrogen Truck

The newly commissioned truck is equipped with a 190 kW hydrogen fuel cell that emits no greenhouse gases while driving. With a range of around 400 kilometres, the truck offers an environmentally friendly alternative for freight transport in the Rhine-Ruhr area. The 661 V/73.2 kWh battery power supports the powerful motor with a torque of 350 kW/3,400 Nm for transporting a load of up to twelve tonnes.

The trailer attached to this innovative truck carries an additional load of eight tons. With 38 parking spaces, double-decker equipment and the ability to unload long goods from the side, the truck is specially designed to meet the needs of BAUHAUS. It offers the ideal solution for transporting non-stackable European pallets and long goods, which are often required in specialized centers.

The truck is owned by the renowned transport service provider Nolden Logistics from Kerpen and is being used on behalf of BAUHAUS. This partnership allows both companies to gain valuable experience in using fuel cell technology under real-world conditions – an important prerequisite for the future expansion of this environmentally friendly mode of transport.

Why hydrogen?

BAUHAUS transports a wide range of products between its warehouses and specialist centres throughout Germany every day. The use of the hydrogen truck, which achieves an impressive range considering the current state of technology, is an important step towards reducing the company's environmental footprint in the future.

The truck’s fuel cell generates electricity through an electrochemical process using hydrogen and oxygen. The resulting electrical energy powers the vehicle’s electric motors – without combustion and without harmful emissions. The only by-product generated during the transport of goods is harmless water vapor, which is released into the environment. With a range of up to 400 kilometers per tank, the hydrogen truck from BAUHAUS sets new standards in low-emission logistics.

Environmental and climate protection are very important at BAUHAUS.

“Sustainability and environmental protection are a major concern for us at BAUHAUS,” says Torsten Winter, Head of Comprehensive Logistics at BAUHAUS. “We promote sustainability in all areas of business at BAUHAUS, including, of course, logistics. We are very pleased to have started this project and thus be able to gather practical experience and data transfer with fuel cell trucks at an early stage.”

Bauhaus – Specializing in workshops, houses and gardens

As early as 1960, BAUHAUS brought a new idea to Germany: branded products from a wide range of self-service ranges, presented under one roof. Based on this successful concept, more than 160 specialist centres were established in Germany. Throughout Europe, BAUHAUS is represented more than 290 times in 19 countries. Each specialist centre is divided into 15 specialist departments. BAUHAUS has remained true to its basic concept – specialist retail quality and product variety at the best prices – to this day and is continuously developing it.
