Two comets are expected to shine bright this year during the “Year of the Comet.” Comet Bonte Brooks, which will soon have a good opportunity to observe, and Comet Shikenzan-Atlas, which is expected to become a large comet in the fall, will approach Earth.
This time we will introduce the components and types of comets that you should know, in addition to two observation points for comets.
Why are comets called “dirty snowmen”?

When a comet approaches the Sun, heat gradually melts the comet's surface, causing the ice to evaporate and gas and dust to rise from the surface. The comet's body appears to shine as if it is surrounded by a faint light, and this is called “coma.” There are two types of impressive comet tails, depending on their appearance and composition. One “ion tail” (or plasma tail) is generated by gas, and the second is the “dust tail” (or dust tail) created by dust. As the comet approaches the Sun, the amount of gas and dust escaping from its body increases, making its tail brighter and its tail longer and brighter.
The orbits of the planets in the solar system are roughly circular ellipses, while the orbits of comets are often elongated ellipses. Some comets have parabolic or hyperbolic orbits, and these comets approach the Sun only once and never return. Among comets with elliptical orbits, those with an orbital period of less than 200 years are called “short-period comets,” and those with longer periods are called “long-period comets.” Most short-period comets orbit in the same plane as the ecliptic and in the same direction as the planet. On the other hand, the orbits of long-period comets are not related to the plane of the ecliptic, and the direction of their revolutions is also irregular. Comet Punt Brooks, whose period is about 70 years, is a short-period comet, and Comet Shikenzan-Atlas is expected to be a long-period comet and will never return.
[مارس/أبريل]Back after 70 years! “Comet Bonte Brooks”

It is expected that this return will be visible with binoculars starting approximately in the second half of March. In March, it moves from Andromeda to Pisces to Aries, and can be seen low in the western and northwestern sky from dusk until early evening. The brightness at this time is expected to be 5 to 6 magnitude.
Brightness increases in April, and the best viewing opportunity is until around April 10, when the influence of moonlight is minimal. Comet Bonte Brooks is characterized by recurring “bursts” of rapidly increasing brightness. Its perihelion pass, when it is closest to the sun, will be on April 21. If an explosion occurs before or after this day, it will likely become brighter. It can be seen before the moon appears from April 25 onwards, so conditions are favorable throughout April. I would definitely like to keep an eye on the periodic comet that returns for the first time in 70 years.
[أكتوبر/نوفمبر]The possibility of the presence of a large comet that can be seen with the naked eye! “Purple Mountain/Comet Atlas”

Its brightness is expected to increase to negative magnitude around September 28, when it passes perihelion. Around this time, it can be seen low in the eastern sky just before sunrise. Around October 10th, you can expect to see its tail in the western sky after sunset.
Comet Shikenzan-Atlas is attracting the attention of astronomy fans as it is expected to reach a brightness of approximately -5 mag. Let's look forward to this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the comet's tail with the naked eye.
