Intel gave one away on Wednesday an agreement Known to British semiconductor developer Arm. Chips with the ARM architecture are found in almost all smartphones and tablets — and are now also frequently used in computers, cars, and data centers.
Intel continues to rely on its own chip architectures for its own processors, but it also wants to establish itself as a contract manufacturer. The collaboration should make it possible to develop and produce chips based on ARM designs using Intel technologies. Intel could at least get involved in the business this way. The private group’s attempts to bring its processors to smartphones years ago failed because service providers preferred the more economical ARM chipset.
Intel focuses on processors for personal computers and data centers. However, in the computer realm, Apple has dropped the ranks of Intel customers and instead uses in-house developed ARM-based chips in its Macs. Pat Gelsinger, the head of Intel, hopes to be able to compete with major contract manufacturers such as TSMC from Taiwan. (dpa/rs)
