Apple could develop its own search engine – Bloomberg’s Garman – CNET Japan

Google has been the default search engine for the iPhone for more than 10 years, and as part of this agreement, Google, the largest web company, will receive an annual investment of between $8 billion to $12 billion (about 1.2 trillion to 1.8 trillion yen). He is said to have paid Apple. But the deal was complicated by a lawsuit filed by the US government alleging Google’s continued monopoly on online search and online advertising sales.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman announced on October 1st US time thatNewsletter “Playback”Apple said it could do better and make as much money as this deal. If Apple launched its own search engine, it could generate advertising sales similar to the revenue it generates from the Apple Watch.

Gorman points out that while this is unlikely to happen, there are already glimpses of what this search engine will look like in Apple products. Services like the App Store, Maps, Apple TV, and News already have search engines built into them.

As part of the potential effort, Apple reportedly has a team developing a next-generation search engine, codenamed Pegasus. The technology, developed under the supervision of John Giannandrea, Apple’s senior vice president of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), returns more accurate search results, according to Gorman’s article. It’s already built into some apps, but the search engine itself may one day appear on the App Store.

Apple has also made improvements to Spotlight, the iOS search feature that lets you search for things on your device. A few years ago, Spotlight added web search results, but the results themselves were provided by Bing or Microsoft’s Google, Gorman noted.

CNET reached out to Apple for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.
