Anti-slip technology: what does the new surface on the runway at Frankfurt Airport actually do?

At Frankfurt Airport, a new private deck is causing problems. But what exactly is this anti-slip coating and what does it do?

In the end it was just a minor glitch. A few hours after reopening, Frankfurt Airport had to close its northwest runway again. The newly applied surface applied severe stress to the landing aircraft’s tires. Meanwhile, the rollers had smoothed the surface again and solved the problem, and runway 25R/07L was back in action.

But what exactly is this surface that Frankfurt Airport has previously installed on its northwest runway? The anti-slip coating under the name Fl8safe is manufactured by Possehl Spezialbau from Sprendlingen in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is composed of epoxy resin and gravel, therefore it has a much better grip and is more durable and safer than regular asphalt.

Less maintenance, more security

The special cover has many advantages. According to the manufacturer, the aircraft’s braking distances have been reduced thanks to the higher grip, even in wet, slushy or sleet conditions. In addition, Fl8safe improves directional stability when landing with a crosswind (in jargon one speaks of a crosswind landing), according to Possehl Spezialbau. And last but not least, the roof freezes less quickly and the ice can be removed more quickly. All this increases security.

The company highlights other benefits for airport operators. Because planes can leave the runway more quickly, the special deck allows for more movements at the same time. In addition, with a service life of up to 21 years, it is significantly more durable than conventional roofing with 12 years, requires less maintenance and results in fewer delays due to severe weather conditions.

Various service providers around the world

Airlines also have an added benefit. Manufacturer Possehl Spezialbau promises that rubber wear in the landing area will be reduced by about 40 percent. This means airlines may need longer tires. Surface has already been installed in Amsterdam, Athens, Berlin-Brandenburg, Brussels and more.

However, Rheinhessen is not the only company that produces such a cap. The International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO requires airports to provide good grip on runways, even when wet. In a simple design, this is achieved through grooves that are milled into the base.
