You start Diablo 4 each Season at Level 1. Blizzard confirms players’ fear. The new character’s coercion causes frustration, even though it’s always been that way.

Hamburg – Diablo 4 is currently played by millions of players during the campaign or at the start of the endgame. But all the grinding and leveling up is pretty much for nothing: because in July you start completely from scratch with a new character if you want to take a new seasonal journey and Battle Pass with you. Veterans and new players argue if this is any good. We explain how the seasonal character works in Diablo 4 and what you take with you from the regular game for the seasons.

In Diablo 4, you level up for free now – you have to start at roughly 0 in July

Diablo 4 shocked: After the stellar campaign, many are hungry for new content for the first season in Diablo 4, which is set to debut in July 2023. But a message is reaching Diablo players like lightning: you must play a brand new character for the new season, the previous character can’t participate in Battle Pass and the new story.

The veterans might now think:Well, that’s been the case in Diablo for over 10 yearsBut the massive success of Diablo 4 spawned millions of new Diablo players who don’t even know they might be such fools for nothing. Among the newcomers are well-known game journalists who are suddenly shocked and personally ask Blizzard if they really should create a character New every season. In this tweet, Rob Ferguson, president of Blizzard, replies:

Seasonal character in Diablo 4: With the start of a new season in Diablo 4, you have to create a completely new character, and unfortunately this is true. Only this new class can fly from level 0 to level 100 and take part in the so-called “Seasonal Journey”, which is the story of the season. Most importantly, only the seasonal character can advance in the new Diablo 4 Season Pass.

This means: even if you paid for the season in Diablo 4 but played with your old “regular” characters, you won’t get a single item from the new season pass. At the end of the season, after about 3 months, your seasonal character will transform into a regular character and take all the items looted from the Season Pass and Season Journey with you into the normal game.

Seasons and Battle Pass in Diablo 4 are briefly explained

Every 3 months, Diablo 4 will start a new season with new seasonal content.

You must have completed the main Diablo 4 campaign to participate in the seasons.

Each new season starts with a completely new seasonal character at level 1 – regular characters remain unchanged (Eternals or Eternals) and at the end of the season the seasonal character also becomes an Eternal.

Seasonal content includes but is not limited to: new mechanics, additional gameplay features, new mission lines, and new legendary items.

The Diablo 4 Battle Pass, which contains both a free and a paid bonus track, is intended to provide additional variety.

Some things will be captured for a seasonal character, so leveling up in the lead up to Season 1 is “almost” useless: Lilith statues and bonuses in Diablo 4 as well as map progression (i.e. areas that have already been uncovered) will be captured.

Unfortunately, turning a seasonal character into an eternal character isn’t as cool as it sounds. Because if you want to participate in the second season later, you will have to create a completely new seasonal character and increase the progression separately from all previous progress – both in the regular game and in the first season. An ongoing loop that many players may not be ready for or simply don’t feel like.

Diablo 4 divides the community: each season you have to level up a new character

Here’s the reaction of Diablo players: You can often hear from longtime veterans that the seasonal system has always been in Diablo, that is, it has a tradition. However, the majority of players are not satisfied with the old season system in Diablo 4:

  • This definitely wouldn’t sit well with most players. I hope you [Blizzard] Have Plan B if your monthly active players drop by 90%Mike replied to Diablo Chief.
  • Colleague Paul Tassi from Forbes reprimands: “I think it’s ridiculous that the experience points earned from immortal characters can’t even be used to get a paid battle pass“.
  • Fellow PCGamer Tyler Wild says (sarcastically):At this rate, understanding functions in video games in ten years will be like explaining what quantum wave functions mean“.
  • Why are people so upset that this is exactly how Diablo 3 has been through seasons?DRACO writes under criticism on Twitter.

While the system is similar to what it was in Diablo 3 and similar to Diablo 2, yes. It’s important to remember that the paid season pass is new to Diablo 4 (not to mention the new MMO trend). So it’s no longer just a ladder where the best players race to reach level 100.

It is questionable if Blizzard will change the season system after the criticism. We will definitely keep you updated here. Our editor Janick chides Blizzard, meanwhile: Diablo 4 is the game of the year for many — but seasons can ruin everything
