Review by Antonio Pappano – Elia

Review by Antonio Pappano – Elia

While the German version of Mendelssohn's “Elias” has been relatively frequently attested on recordings, the selection of the first English version has been much smaller. The London Symphony Orchestra, with chorus and orchestra conducted by Antonio Pappano, performed “Elijah” in concert in January and is now releasing the recording. Pappano gives the oratorio quite operatic qualities, keeping the 130-member chorus relatively mobile and giving the orchestral setting a Berlioz feel in places. The main character has Gerald Finley with resonant features, and Sarah Connolly and Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha are convincing in the main female roles. Alan Clayton's tenor fits perfectly harmoniously with boy Ewan Christian's voice. Overall, a less historical performance, but lacking in emotion and precision.
